Here at Habitat, we believe that everyone should have the right to a safe and decent place to live. A place they can truly call home. Based on current trends, the chronic shortage of social and affordable housing is expected to be more than 600,000 units by 2029.
Our major affordable housing project in Yea, Victoria.
In our plight to fight homelessness, we’ve partnered up with Homes for Homes – a social enterprise developed by The Big Issue that invites the entire community to be part of the nationwide solution to homelessness.
Homes for Homes raises funds for social and affordable housing through donations from property sales. Participants add a simple legal mechanism to their property title that, when the property is sold, prompts a voluntary, tax-deductible donation of 0.1% of the sale price to Homes for Homes. For example, a $750 donation is included in disbursements at settlement from the sale of a $750,000 property.
The partnership will see eight of the remaining lots in our major affordable housing project in Yea included in the Homes for Homes program as an initial step. Further properties will be included as they are purchased and developed, ensuring that each time a Habitat home is sold there is an even greater impact on the lives of people in need.
This year, the National Homelessness Week’s theme is ‘ending homelessness together’.
We are proud to partner with Homes for Homes and take another step towards addressing the issues of housing affordability and homelessness.
Together, we can strive to end homelessness together.
